BRIDGETOWN – The Barbados-based Caribbean Drought and Rainfall Monitoring Network (CDPMN) said on Monday that in recent months rainfall deficits have accumulated in parts of the Caribbean, particularly in the half northern eastern Caribbean chain, and parts of the Bahamas and Belize.

“While there are few concerns about short-term drought by the end of December 2021 in these parts of the Caribbean, there is some concern about long-term drought by the end of November 2021. that can impact large rivers, reservoirs and groundwater, ”the CDPMN said in its latest Caribbean Drought Bulletin.

He said this was particularly the case in the northern part of the Bahamas, but that the northern part of the eastern Caribbean and southern Belize should closely monitor their water resources.

According to the CDPMN, for the period from June to August, mixed conditions prevailed during the three-month period in the Eastern Caribbean.

He said Trinidad ranged from extremely humid to normal from west to east; Moderately humid to slightly dry Tobago; Very wet pomegranate; Moderately humid Barbados; Saint-Vincent and Saint-Lucia slightly humid to normal; to dry; Dominica was mostly normal to moderately dry, while Antigua was slightly to moderately dry; Predominantly normal to slightly dry St Kitts.

Jamaica was exceptionally humid in the northwest and southeast to moderately humid in the west and normal in the northeast, while the northern Bahamas was slightly to severely dry and Belize was normal in the west to moderately dry in eastern areas.

The CDPMN said the long-term drought situation was evolving in the Bahamas and “may possibly continue” in southern Belize, Dominica, Martinique and the United States.

“Areas ending in long-term drought by the end of November could experience lower than normal water levels in large reservoirs, large rivers and groundwater, which would become a concern for the dry season. 2021-22 “, he added. (CMC)
