USVI equalizes Saint-Vincent in CONCACAF U-20 qualifier

The U.S. Virgin Islands’ national women’s under-20 football team won their first match point at the CONCACAF Women’s Under-20 Championship qualifying tournament in Willemstad, Curacao on Wednesday.

The USVI U-20 team came away with a 1-1 draw against Saint Vincent and the Grenadines in their second and final group game at the Ergilio Hato stadium in Willemstad.

Midfielder Tania Weyland scored the only goal for the US Virgin Islands (0-1-1 in Group A, one point), while Denel Creese scored the only goal for Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (0 -0-1, one point).

Weyland, a St. Thomas native who is now a junior at Lausanne Collegiate High School in Memphis, Tenn., Gave the USVI the lead early, scoring in the third minute. But Creese tied the game at 1 in the 34th minute.

With the U.S. Virgin Islands wrapped up in the group game, there is one game left to determine who will advance to the playoff rounds of the U-20 Women’s Championship.

Saint Vincent and the Grenadines face Bermuda (1-0-0, three points) in the last group match at 5.30pm today at Ergilio Hato stadium. A victory for Bermuda or a draw sends them to the next round, but a victory for Saint-Vincent would make them the representative of the group.

On Wednesday, the Bahamas beat Anguilla 1-0 in Group B, host Curacao beat Antigua and Barbuda 1-0 in Group C and Suriname beat Belize 3-2 in Group D.

The other matches today pitted Belize against Grenada, the Cayman Islands against Anguilla and Saint Lucia against Antigua and Barbuda.
